Eighth Grade Promotion/Retention Policy
As the school year begins in earnest, the Essex Intermediate School eighth grade teachers would like to communicate with parents/guardians our school policy on promotion to Essex High School.
In order to pass eighth grade at Essex Intermediate School and be promoted to the ninth grade at Essex High School, students will need to pass all four academic core classes (Physical Science, English 8, Math (Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, or Geometry), and Ancient World History & Geography), pass all four SOLs, and comply with the Essex Intermediate School's attendance policy.
In order to participate in the Eighth Grade Promotion Ceremony at the end of the year, students will need to pass all four academic core classes.
With this in mind, we encourage you to check frequently with your child to ensure he/she understands the expectations for all of his/her core academic classes. Although teachers will send grade updates frequently throughout the year to keep you informed of your child's progress, parents/guardians are encouraged to contact teachers as well.
Any questions concerning the eighth grade promotion policy should be directed to Sara Vasko (svasko@essex.k12.va.us or 804-443-3040).
